Tenerife's creative spirit shone brightly as Follycle, a darkly comedic short film written by Tom McIntire, secured the prestigious ‘Best Shorter Short Film’ award at the recent 2024 Marbella International Film Festival.
The film, a quirky tale of vanity and love, owes much of its success to the talent and dedication of its Tenerife-based crew and contributing cast.
Shot across various Tenerife locations, Follycle was directed and produced by Tenerife’s own award-winning filmmaker Deanna Dewey, with Terry Wookey as producer and editor.
Behind the camera was a powerhouse team of island talent, including Pol Camarero Just as Director of Photography, Patrick Klossas as First Assistant Camera, and Cristian Morales Medina as Second Assistant Camera.
Ensuring everyone looked their part, Julie Perkova worked her magic with make-up, while Joy Liddell kept the crew and cast fueled with catering. Production logistics were managed by Joe Cawley, ensuring a seamless shoot.
With its witty script and arresting visuals, Follycle tells the story of Devlin, a gay man grappling with insecurity and the consequences of an experimental hair-loss treatment gone hilariously wrong.
From the flamboyant chaos of a clubland party to the tender moments of a relationship under strain, the film is as much a visual feast as it is a poignant exploration of love and self-acceptance.
Starring British actors Richard Stride and Jamie Bannerman, the film’s cast also showcased Tenerife’s rich pool of talent with Bradley Chermside as a hunky barman, Irma Mali as the eccentric Dr. Pavelo, Yurifer López Blanco as the dazzling ‘Twinkle,’ and Shane Haigh playing himself as Mister Sister.
A host of Tenerife extras brought the nightclub scenes to life, including Mandy Scholes, Poppy McLean, Tracy Chase, Jean Bolton, David Beverley, Linda Consterdine and Lee Jackson.
Director Deanna Dewey was effusive in her praise for Tenerife’s contributions: “The island gave us so much more than great locations, its talent—both in front of and behind the camera—brought heart and humor to every scene. This award belongs to them as much as it does to the film itself.”
The Follycle team’s Marbella victory is a significant nod to Tenerife’s growing presence in the global film scene, showcasing the island’s ability to deliver internationally acclaimed cinematic productions.
As Tenerife’s creative community celebrates this achievement, Follycle sets an example of how local talent can compete, and win, on the international stage. For more information on Follycle and its award-winning journey, contact TF Film Productions SL, [email protected]
