Tenerife is gearing up for a spectacular Guinness World Record attempt this Saturday, 13th December, with the creation of a giant turrón measuring 1,100 metres in length and weighing 3,366 kilos. The ambitious project will only use local ingredients and take place in the Plaza Pública in Puerto de Santiago, where the public can watch the process throughout the day. If successful, the island will surpass the current world record held by Sicily, which stands at 1,004 metres.

This year’s challenge is inspired by an event held in 2024, when Santiago del Teide produced a 110-metre, 295-kilo turrón. According to Chef Pablo Pastor, the idea to multiply the size by ten came during the measurements of last year's creation, leading to a year-long planning process.

To reach the enormous 1.1-kilometre target, organisers have designed a structure made up of 47 metres of tables arranged in a long zigzag, ensuring the final piece can be measured as one continuous block.

Registration open to volunteers

Santiago del Teide Town Hall has invited adults who wish to take part to register online or by phone at 922 86 31 27 (extensions 402, 403 and 405). Last year’s record attempt saw strong community participation, and organisers hope for the same spirit again this weekend.

What goes into a record-breaking turrón?

The recipe shows local produce, including honey and almonds from Santiago del Teide. The ingredients include:

  • 1,200 kilos of gofio
  • 400 kilos of chocolate
  • 300 kilos of local honey
  • 300 kilos of sugar
  • 150 kilos of dehydrated banana
  • 100 kilos of chopped almonds
  • 35 kilos of almonds from the municipality
  • 1,600 litres of syrup

Four industrial mixers and specially designed moulds will be used to prepare the enormous sweet.

Guinness World Records oversight

An official Guinness World Records auditor will supervise the measurement, checking the turrón every 25 metres, while the final verification will be carried out by a municipal official.

As in 2024, the finished turrón will be donated to care homes for the elderly and vulnerable groups across the municipality.

The main event and official attempt are scheduled for 3:30 pm on Saturday, and organisers expect a large turnout for what could become one of Tenerife’s most memorable festive achievements.
