In a deeply troubling incident late Monday night, a teenage cyclist was left injured following a hit-and-run in the Lomo Blanco area of Gran Canaria, with the suspect not only fleeing the scene but allegedly stealing the boy’s bicycle.
According to eyewitnesses, the motorist struck the teenager and then, in a brazen move, took the youngster’s bike before speeding away, leaving the injured minor alone until emergency services arrived.
The Local Police’s Special Night Unit (UNE) swiftly responded to the call, and the teenager was transported to hospital. His current condition has not yet been disclosed.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to identify and locate the driver, and are urging the public to come forward with any information or dashcam footage that could assist in the case.
“We’re asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area or who might have relevant details to contact the police immediately,” a spokesperson for the investigation said.
This disturbing case highlights a worrying rise in hit-and-run incidents across the region. Increasingly, drivers are abandoning their responsibilities at the scene of accidents, failing to offer aid or identify themselves, a trend that is challenging police resources and threatening public safety.
In response, local authorities are stepping up enforcement efforts and launching awareness campaigns to remind drivers of both their legal obligations and their moral duty to help others in the event of an accident. Community-led initiatives, supported by local organisations, are also working to prevent further incidents through education and stronger neighbourhood vigilance.
The theft of the bicycle adds an especially shocking dimension to this case, turning what was already a serious road safety incident into an appalling act of criminal behaviour.
Police continue to appeal to the public to assist in bringing the perpetrator to justice and reaffirm their commitment to making Gran Canaria’s roads safer for everyone, especially its most vulnerable road users.
