The Spanish Met Office (AEMET) has issued weather warnings for the Canary Islands starting tomorrow, Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach or even exceed 37°C in parts of Gran Canaria.
The highest temperatures are forecast for east, south and west of the islands, where an orange heat warning will be in force between 11:00am and 7:00pm.
Gran Canaria worst affected
Gran Canaria is expected to bear the brunt of the hot weather, with additional yellow warnings remaining in place for temperatures of up to 35°C across the island's summit and the Tejeda basin.
The island is also under yellow warnings for strong winds, with gusts of up to 70km/h, and for coastal conditions, with rough seas and Force 7 winds expected offshore.
Heat warnings extended to more islands
The yellow heat warning, already active on Monday for parts of Gran Canaria, will be expanded on Tuesday to include:
- The east, south and west of Tenerife
- The Santa Cruz metropolitan area
- La Palma
- La Gomera
- El Hierro
Residents and visitors across the affected islands are being advised to take extra precautions during the hottest part of the day by staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, wearing light clothing and checking on elderly or vulnerable people.
With high temperatures, strong winds and rough sea conditions expected to coincide, Tuesday is set to bring challenging weather across much of the Canary Islands, particularly in Gran Canaria, where the most severe conditions are forecast.
