The Canary Islands are facing a mixed bag of weather today, Friday, with rain showers in some areas, strong winds and temperatures exceeding 30°C in others, according to the latest forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Cloudy intervals are expected across Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, particularly during the first half of the day, with chances of light and isolated rain before clearer skies develop during the afternoon.
Meanwhile, northern areas of the higher islands will see considerably more cloud, accompanied by occasional light showers, although some sunny spells should break through during the afternoon.
Elsewhere, conditions will generally remain clear or partly cloudy, although some cloud could develop over inland areas of Tenerife.
Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, although daytime highs could fall slightly in the mid-altitude areas of the mountainous islands.
However, it will still be hot in southern Gran Canaria, where temperatures could exceed 32°C, while parts of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura could reach or exceed 30°C.
Seas will build from moderate to rough, with a northerly swell of between one and two metres, although the swell will come from the south in coastal waters around Tenerife and La Gomera.
TENERIFE
Northern Tenerife will be predominantly cloudy, with light and occasional rain most likely in the north-east and a lower chance elsewhere along the northern slopes.
The rest of the island will be mostly clear or partly cloudy, although cloud could develop over inland and southern areas, where an isolated light shower cannot be ruled out.
Temperatures will remain broadly unchanged, with a slight decrease possible at mid-altitudes. Temperatures could exceed 30°C locally on the south-east coast.
Moderate north-easterly winds are forecast, becoming strong along the east coast, western tip and south-eastern side of the metropolitan area, where locally very strong gusts are possible. Lighter breezes are expected along the south-west coast.
General temperatures: Low of 24°C and a high of 31°C.
GRAN CANARIA
Northern Gran Canaria will be cloudy with occasional light rain, while the rest of the island will be mostly clear or sunny.
Temperatures will remain similar to recent days, although maximum temperatures are expected to fall in the mid-altitude and mountain areas.
It will remain considerably warmer in the south and west, where temperatures could exceed 32°C.
Moderate northerly winds are forecast, becoming strong at times on the south-east coast and western tip of the island. Locally very strong gusts cannot be ruled out in these areas. Breezier conditions will ease along the south-west coast, where local sea breezes are expected.
General temperatures: Low of 24°C and a high of 29°C.
LANZAROTE
Lanzarote will have cloudy intervals during the first half of the day and again later in the evening, with mostly clear skies during the afternoon.
There is a possibility of isolated light rain before midday.
Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, although 30°C could be exceeded locally in the south-east of the island.
Moderate northerly winds are expected, with stronger intervals across inland areas.
General temperatures: Low of 23°C and a high of 30°C.
FUERTEVENTURA
Fuerteventura will also start with cloudy intervals before becoming mostly sunny during the afternoon, with cloud returning later.
There is a small chance of isolated light rain before midday.
Temperatures will see little change, although 30°C could be exceeded locally across inland and southern areas.
Moderate northerly winds are forecast, becoming strong at times on the southern side of the Jandía peninsula during the afternoon.
General temperatures: Low of 23°C and a high of 29°C.
Overall, Friday will bring noticeably different conditions depending on which part of the Canary Islands you are in, ranging from cloud and showers in northern areas to sunshine and temperatures above 30°C in parts of the south.
