Arrecife’s council has praised local businesses that opened their doors last Sunday to coincide with the arrival of two major cruise ships carrying around 9,000 visitors. Ten shops along Calle Real responded to the call from Mayor Yonathan de León, offering fashion, design items, perfumes, cosmetics, gourmet products, shoes, and souvenirs to the influx of tourists from the MSC Virtuosa and P&O’s Ventura.
De León described the decision as a positive step for small businesses in the capital, encouraging them to take advantage of cruise ship stopovers that fall on Sundays.
Councillor for Commerce and Tourism, Eli Merino, confirmed that ten more cruise ships are scheduled to dock in Arrecife on Sundays between now and November. She stressed that advance knowledge of these calls will allow shopkeepers and restaurants to plan their opening hours to maximise sales.
Since 2019, the entire municipality of Arrecife has been classified as a “high tourist influx zone” under Canary Islands law. This status allows shops across the capital to open freely on Sundays and public holidays.
The council also revealed that several new outlets are preparing to open in Calle Real and surrounding streets in the coming weeks, including fashion and perfume franchises, as the new cruise season approaches in autumn and winter.
Officials hope the extended trading will boost income for local businesses and improve the experience of thousands of visitors arriving by sea.
