Flights at César Manrique–Lanzarote Airport were disrupted yesterday evening (Wednesday) after a dog strayed onto the runway area, forcing air traffic controllers to suspend take-offs and landings for around half an hour.
The incident, reported by Spain’s air traffic controllers on social media, meant that five incoming flights had to circle in holding patterns before they were cleared to land. Several outbound flights were also delayed, with some departures running up to 30 minutes late.
The dog was eventually caught, allowing operations to return to normal. Controllers stressed that “safety comes first”, explaining that any foreign object, even a small animal, near a runway represents a potential risk to aircraft, passengers, and crew.
The airport is now operating as usual, and no further disruptions are expected.
