The Arona Local Police have recovered a stolen luxury car in the south of Tenerife that had been fitted with false number plates, and have placed a man under investigation for multiple offences, including vehicle theft and document forgery.
The case began on 26th January when traffic officers noticed a luxury car parked irregularly on a public road. Routine checks quickly revealed that the number plate did not correspond to the vehicle’s make and model as listed in Spain’s national traffic database.
Further investigation uncovered that the plates in fact belonged to a different car entirely. Moreover, the visible chassis number (VIN) was not registered in Spain, though it did appear in European databases as a vehicle that had been officially deregistered in another country.
Given these irregularities, police seized the car and launched a full inquiry. During questioning, the man responsible for the vehicle admitted that the number plates had been “loaned” to him by a third party.
Officers then worked with official dealerships to cross-check the chassis number, eventually confirming that the car had been reported stolen in Spain and was listed in the national police records.
In an attempt to legitimise ownership, the suspect presented a sales contract. However, forensic handwriting experts determined that both the buyer’s and seller’s signatures on the document had been forged and written by the same person.
As a result, the man is now facing charges for the theft of the vehicle and five counts of document forgery under Spanish law. The investigation remains ongoing.
