A Rolex watch discovered at a local shop that buys and sells gold has led to the arrest of a man and a woman in Lanzarote, according to a press release from the National Police.
In September, during a routine inspection of a store in Arrecife, officers noticed and recognised an unusual gold Rolex watch for sale, prompting further investigation.
They discovered that the watch had been reported stolen so they contacted the owner for more information. After taking statements and continuing with their investigation, police identified the suspects as a woman employed as a caregiver and a man with no prior criminal record.
The victim’s carer had exploited the trust placed in her, and the vulnerability of the man under her care, to gradually steal family jewellery from the client's bedroom.
The stolen items were then passed to an accomplice, who sold them through various gold outlets. Police have estimated that the pair took approximately €6,500 from the sale of the stolen jewellery. They have successfully tracked and recovered the majority of the stolen items and €2,700 in cash.
Following the completion of the investigation, the arrested individuals have been handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for further proceedings.
