The ongoing debate over the relocation of the taxi rank in Las Chafiras, in San Miguel de Abona, remains unresolved as local authorities grapple with the issue.
The controversy was reignited on October 31st following a proposal by the Socialist Party (PSOE), which argues that the current rank fails to meet accessibility and capacity standards, especially during the ongoing roadworks.
Located next to the Disa petrol station, the current taxi rank only has space for eight vehicles, a situation that José Carlos Rodríguez, the PSOE spokesperson, has described as "ridiculous".
In response, the party has suggested creating a new 800-square-metre facility across from the existing location, complete with shelters and restroom facilities. Rodríguez emphasized the urgency of planning the project to avoid additional costs after the completion of the ongoing work.
The governing coalition, led by Mayor Arturo González, has acknowledged the need to find a solution. Rafael Alejandro Baute, the Councillor for Public Works and Infrastructure, admitted uncertainty about the final location of the rank, stating that the matter "remains up in the air."
He linked the decision to the availability of land following the completion of development works at the Las Chafiras industrial estate, which are scheduled to finish in the first half of next year.
The local government has indicated that several potential sites are being considered. It has also reassured stakeholders that any decisions will be made in consultation with taxi associations to ensure a coordinated approach.
As discussions continue, the relocation of the taxi rank remains a pressing issue, reflecting broader concerns about urban planning and accessibility in this rapidly developing area.
