Shaded areas to be installed in children’s play parks in Lanzarote

The Arrecife council is set to unveil new shaded areas in its children’s play parks in the capital of Lanzarote this autumn, following a major investment of nearly one million euros.

The project will benefit nearly 30 parks across the city’s neighbourhoods, offering much-needed protection for children from the sun.

The initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Yonathan de León, comes in direct response to a long-standing request from local families seeking improved conditions and safety for children in outdoor play areas.

The project contract, divided into three lots, has been formally awarded, with installation work scheduled to begin before summer and completed by this Autumn, overseen by the Children's Parks Department, under the leadership of Councillor Roberto Herbón.

“These shaded structures are essential for protecting our children from extreme weather and solar exposure,” said Herbón, who added that the total investment in Arrecife’s play parks now stands at approximately three million euros, combining previous renovation efforts with this latest development.

The new canopies are designed to significantly reduce solar radiation in play areas, creating safer and more comfortable spaces for families to enjoy throughout the year. The project also supports Arrecife Town Council’s broader urban renewal strategy, which includes the modernisation of public spaces, improvements in accessibility, the resurfacing of around 150 streets, and the upgrade of sports facilities.

Since December, when the public tender for the shading initiative was launched, the council has remained committed to revitalising the city's infrastructure. The recent renewal of all children’s play parks in Arrecife, now nearly 30 in total, has already introduced updated, safer, and more hygienic synthetic surfaces.

With works commencing in the coming weeks, families across Arrecife can look forward to more comfortable and sun-protected play environments by the time autumn arrives.
