Two spectacular accidents at the Isla de Lanzarote Rally this weekend, left several people injured and two drivers and co-drivers in hospital after they crashed out of the event.
Fortunately, the four have been discharged from the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife after treatment for minor injuries, but it would be easy to think they were seriously hurt after watching the videos of the crashes.
In an eventful couple of days, one of the most serious accidents took place on a stage that crossed the municipality of Haría, where one of the cars left the track and almost ran over two spectators.
Competitors, Ariday Cabrera and Jorge Unpiérrez, were involved in a spectacular crash on Saturday when Peugeot 208 Rally4 rolled several times before coming to a standstill close to spectators.
The Hyundai i20 R5 driven by the Gran Canarian driver, Toñi Ponce, also crashed out when he was running in 5th position after he lost control and crashed into a stationary white van parked at the side of the course and had to be admitted to Hospital with back pain.
Gregorio González and Gabriel Rivero also suffered one of the ‘offs’, but fortunately, neither was hurt when they rolled their Toyota Yaris Tsport.
The event was won by Toñín Suárez and Jorge Cedrés in their Porsche 911 GT3, who won five of the eight timed sections (in addition to SS8 Plus), with a lead of 13.7 seconds over the rest of the field in the final classification.
