All schools and colleges across the Canary Islands are being closed by the Department of Education over the next two days, and pupils will switch to online learning as authorities suspend in-person classes due to the arrival of Storm Therese.
The decision, confirmed by the Canary Islands Government, aims to reduce travel and protect students, teachers and staff amid forecasts of severe weather, including strong winds, and heavy rain.
The suspension of face-to-face teaching will begin tomorrow, Thursday 19th March, initially affecting islands in the western province — Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
Later on Thursday, the measure will extend to Gran Canaria, particularly during the afternoon and evening, then on Friday, 20th March, they will also be closed in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura so that all islands in the archipelago will operate fully online, with no in-person educational activity taking place.
Universities and staff also affected
The University of La Laguna has also confirmed the suspension of on-campus teaching from Thursday.
Administrative activity will move to remote working wherever possible, with only essential on-site services continuing in specific facilities.
The measures apply not only to students and teaching staff but also to administrative and support personnel, all of whom are required to avoid attending educational centres in person.
Safety first amid severe weather
The move follows guidance from emergency services and civil protection authorities, who have warned of potentially dangerous conditions linked to Storm Therese.
Officials say the combination of heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible flooding has made it necessary to limit movement across the islands.
Advice to families and staff
The Canary Islands Government is urging families and education workers to stay informed through official channels, as further decisions will depend on how the storm develops.
Residents are also being reminded to follow safety advice and minimise travel during the period of adverse weather.
