SCORCHIO! The Canary Islands record the highest overnight temperatures in Spain

The Canary Islands are enduring intense heat at night, with the region recording the six highest temperatures in Spain overnight. While most of Spain begins to see relief from the recent heatwave, the Canary Islands and Andalusia continue to experience extreme conditions, marked by stifling days and tropical nights.

In the early hours of Tuesday (August 13th), the municipality of Agüimes in Gran Canaria registered the highest temperature in the entire country, reaching 33.7°C (92.7°F) at 2:40am, according to the Spanish Met Office (AEMET).

Gran Canaria dominated the top spots in AEMET's rankings for the highest temperatures, with Tejeda reaching 33.5°C at 5:50am, Lomo Pedro Alfonso recording 33.4°C at 4:10am, and Agaete seeing 31.7°C at 6:50am. The fifth and sixth spots were also held by Gran Canaria, with Las Tirajanas and Cuevas del Pinar in San Bartolomé de Tirajana recording 31.6°C and 31.3°C, respectively.

Adding to the heat, strong trade winds swept across the islands, with six of the ten windiest locations in Spain also being in the Canary Islands. Agaete experienced gusts of 77 km/h at 2:10am, while the Gran Canaria Airport recorded winds of 72 km/h at midnight. Other notable gusts included 71 km/h in Fuencaliente at 2:00 am, and 67 km/h in both Suerte Alta (Agaete) and El Matorral (San Bartolomé de Tirajana).

AEMET has issued a special yellow alert for the Canary Islands, forecasting that the extreme weather will persist, with high temperatures and strong winds creating challenging conditions across the archipelago. The public are advised to take precautions during this "meteorological stew" as the heat continues.
