Rural tourism is becoming increasingly important to the Canary Islands' economy, and the regional government has announced new financial support to help small countryside accommodations become more modern and environmentally friendly.
The Regional Government, through its Department for Tourism and Employment, has launched a new grants scheme worth €1.25 million. The funding is designed to help owners of rural holiday accommodation improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and use more renewable energy.
The scheme has been officially published in the Canary Islands Official Gazette (BOC) and is funded by the European Union’s Next Generation EU programme.
How much can each property receive?
Each rural accommodation business can apply for up to €50,000. Owners can submit one or more projects, as long as the total amount requested does not go over this limit.
Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, provided all the conditions are met, so early applications are advised.
Why rural tourism matters
Tourism Councillor Jéssica de León said rural tourism plays a key role in supporting local communities. It helps create jobs, encourages small businesses and supports traditional activities such as farming, crafts and local food.
She also explained that rural tourism helps keep people living and working in less populated areas of the islands.
What the grants can be used for
The funding can be used for a wide range of improvements, including:
Saving energy
- Better insulation for buildings
- More efficient heating, cooling and ventilation systems
- Energy-saving lighting and appliances
Smart monitoring
- Systems to track energy and water use
- Technology to manage and reduce day-to-day consumption
Reducing waste
- Recycling and reuse systems
- Improvements that cut down waste from tourist activity
Renewable energy
- Solar panels for self-consumption, as long as they reduce the use of non-renewable energy
Upgrading facilities
- Motion-sensor lighting
- Better boilers and pipe insulation
- More efficient pool heating systems
When do works need to be finished?
All approved improvements must be completed by 1st March 2026.
Full details on how to apply, including deadlines and conditions, are available through the Canary Islands Government’s official website, as published in the BOC.
The aim of the scheme is to make rural accommodation in the Canary Islands greener, cheaper to run and more attractive, while helping local communities benefit from sustainable tourism.
