Rubbish build up in tourist areas is becoming a common occurrence

Residents and business owners on Avenida Noelia Afonso in Playa de Las Américas are concerned about overflowing trash bins and dumped bags and boxes during the summer tourist season. The problem is particularly severe near the local skate park, where waste accumulates around containers placed in narrow sections of the street, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate.

Local residents report that sections of the street become nearly impassable due to the buildup of rubbish bags and other waste dumped next to the containers, which is also causing a bad smell and attracting flies.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the containers are placed in the narrowest parts of the street, forcing pedestrians to navigate around the waste or cross to the other side of the busy road.

The proximity of these bins to tourist businesses and residential areas means they fill up quickly, leading to further congestion and an unsightly environment. Locals have requested that the town council relocate the bins to wider areas or nearby streets like Vía Siete Islas to reduce obstruction, however, nothing has happened.

Clari Pérez, the Arona Town Hall’s Councillor for Sustainability, has acknowledged the issue and stated that improvements to waste collection services are a priority. She noted that such problems are typical during peak tourist seasons and the council is working to address them.

This type of problem is affecting many parts of the Canary Islands, where there aren’t enough rubbish bins for the number of people, impacting tourists' perceptions of the holiday destinations in the archipelago.
