Last night, the Canary Islands experienced some of the hottest temperatures in the whole of Spain marking an extraordinary heatwave that left residents and visitors sweltering. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) confirmed that several spots across the islands recorded temperatures nearing 30°C.
In the early hours, the municipality of Agüimes in Gran Canaria became one of the hottest places in Spain, with temperatures reaching a sizzling 29.4°C at 1:00am, not far behind, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, also in Gran Canaria, recorded 27.8°C just before midnight.
The heat didn't spare Tenerife either, where Güímar saw temperatures hit 27.8°C at the same hour. Meanwhile, Pájara in Fuerteventura registered 27.6°C at 12:10am, and the Doramas Forest Centre in Teide recorded a warm 27.3°C.
But the heat wasn't the only notable weather. The archipelago also faced powerful winds, adding to the challenging conditions. La Aldea de San Nicolás in Gran Canaria experienced wind gusts up to 90km/h at 6:40am. Arure in La Gomera saw gusts of 78km/h at 2:50am, and El Pinar in El Hierro reported winds at 74km/h around 1:10am. The Gran Canaria Airport and Agüimes also felt the force of the wind with gusts exceeding 70km/h at 3:30am.
As this heatwave continues to grip the islands, temperatures in the southern and eastern regions of the eastern islands (Lanzarote and Fuerteventura) and Tenerife are expected to range between 30 and 32°C, while Gran Canaria might even surpass a scorching 34°C.
Strong winds have continued in the islands today (Sunday), particularly in the southeastern and northwestern areas of the mountainous islands, inland areas of southern Lanzarote, and the southern slope of Jandía in Fuerteventura.
These winds have affected flights landing at the south airport in Tenerife, with some diverted to the north airport, including Ryanair FR2425 from Stansted, as it was not possible to land because of the wind.
An advisory for adverse coastal conditions has also been issued, warning of the rough seas ahead. This sizzling summer is showing no signs of letting up just yet.
