The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert status for coastal phenomena affecting the archipelago which comes into effect in various areas across the islands from 8:00pm tonight, Wednesday 8th January.
The adverse conditions will predominantly affect the northern and western coastlines of La Palma, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote.
In La Gomera, the northwest and southwest coasts will be under alert, while the northern shores of Tenerife and Gran Canaria are also expected to experience significant effects.
In response to the pre-alert, the Directorate General of Emergencies has issued the following safety recommendations to protect the public:

- Avoid Dangerous Locations: Refrain from standing at the edge of piers or breakwaters, and do not risk taking photos or videos near crashing waves.
- Fishing Restrictions: Avoid fishing in areas at risk of strong waves.
- Road Safety: Avoid driving near coastal roads during the alert.
- Swimming Safety: Do not swim at remote or unfamiliar beaches where local currents might pose dangers. Avoid beaches marked with red flags or those experiencing strong waves or undercurrents, particularly where there are no lifeguard services.
- Water Sports: Suspend nautical sports during rough sea conditions.
- Observation of Unusual Waves: If you notice abnormal wave activity, stay away from the water and do not approach even if conditions seem to calm suddenly.
- Boat Security: Ensure that vessels are securely moored in sheltered areas.
- Warning Others: If you see individuals in dangerous locations, warn them of the risks.
- Emergency Response: If you fall into the water, stay calm, move away from crashing waves, and wait for rescue. If caught in a current, avoid swimming against it and let the current carry you until it weakens, then swim to safety.
