Police intervene at dangerous rock pools in Tenerife as public ignore they are closed

The Canary Islands General Police Force has reported that they had to intervene at the Charco de La Laja natural pools in San Juan (south Tenerife) yesterday after locals and tourists ignored warning signs prohibiting access to the sunbathing and swimming areas due to active weather warnings.

The incident comes amidst a pre-alert status declared by the Canary Islands Government for dangerous coastal conditions, which affects various areas across the islands including this part of the coast of Tenerife, where the Charco de La Laja natural rock pools are located.

Adverse Weather Conditions

The pre-alert stems from forecasts of rough sea conditions, with combined waves of two to three metres and northeasterly winds ranging from Force 5 to 6 (29 to 49 km/h). Strong swells and a northwest swell of 1 to 2.5 metres are also anticipated.

Images shared on the official X account of the Canary Islands Police reveal that access to this coastal area has been closed. Authorities emphasised that "it is considered dangerous due to coastal phenomena" and urged the public to respect the closures for their own safety.

Despite the warnings, the risky actions of some people ignored the warnings, highlighting the importance of adhering to safety measures during hazardous conditions.
