The Canary Islands Government has put out to tender the drafting of a major mobility study aimed at improving access to the busy port of Los Cristianos and its connection with the TF-1 motorway.
The initiative is led by the Regional Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, and has a base budget of nearly €600,000.
The aim is to create a new plan to tackle the ongoing traffic and access problems in the south of Tenerife.
Los Cristianos port is one of Spain’s busiest passenger terminals, serving ferries to La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro, as well as large volumes of freight and tourist traffic. Congestion around the port and its link to the TF-1 has been a persistent issue, especially during peak hours and holiday periods.
Among the proposals to be analysed is the construction of a tunnel connecting the port directly to Avenida Chayofita, with the aim of channelling traffic more efficiently.
This underground link would cut through a volcanic cone with buildings above, meaning the project requires a detailed technical and geological feasibility study to ensure the safety of existing infrastructure.
The study will also include a full traffic analysis of surrounding roads, a geological and geotechnical survey of the land, and traffic counts across all affected routes. Using these findings, planners will assess the level of service on each road and identify the most suitable solution, based on functional, economic, and environmental criteria.
The option deemed most appropriate will then form the basis for future design and construction projects. Both the study and subsequent works will receive €5 million in funding from Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
