A woman was saved from drowning yesterday afternoon (Saturday) thanks to the swift action of a nurse on board a leisure boat near Papagayo Beach, in Lanzarote, according to the Canary Islands Emergency Services (112).

The incident occurred around 12:00pm, when the woman, in difficulty in the water, was spotted and brought aboard the boat.

She received immediate first aid from a female passenger, who identified herself as a nurse, preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.

Continued care on shore

Once ashore at Marina Rubicón port, emergency staff from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) took over. The woman was stabilised and transferred by ambulance to the island’s public hospital.

She was admitted with moderate symptoms of incomplete drowning, but her condition was not considered life-threatening unless complications arose.

Safety reminder

This rescue highlights both the importance of rapid intervention and the risks associated with swimming off the Canary Islands’ coast. Tourists and residents are reminded to:

  • Swim only in designated safe areas.
  • Pay attention to beach safety flags and warnings.
  • Avoid swimming alone or in unmonitored areas, even in seemingly calm waters like Papagayo.
