The Canary Islands are set to have some welcome relief from the recent heatwave today, Thursday, with temperatures expected to decrease slightly across much of the archipelago.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the drop will be most noticeable in the mid-altitude areas and on southern and western slopes of the islands. However, parts of Gran Canaria and La Palma could still see temperatures reaching 34°C.

Strong winds continue

While temperatures begin to ease, the weather will remain unsettled in other ways as strong trade winds continue to affect the islands.

AEMET has issued yellow weather warnings for strong winds on every island except Fuerteventura. The warning for Lanzarote is expected to be lifted around midday.

Gusty north-easterly winds are forecast, with the strongest conditions expected on the south-east and north-west slopes of the higher islands, exposed mountain areas and, with a lower probability, southern Lanzarote.

Rough seas remain a concern

Yellow warnings also remain in place for rough seas around Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and the western islands.

Authorities continue to urge swimmers, boat users and anyone visiting the coast to take extra care, particularly in areas affected by strong currents and high waves.

Although the worst of the heat is beginning to ease, health oficials continue to advise residents and visitors to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day, and take extra care if spending time outdoors.

Tenerife
Mostly sunny with some cloud along northern coastal areas. Temperatures will ease, particularly in southern mid-altitude areas, although isolated parts of the south and west could still reach 34°C. Strong trade winds will affect the south-east and north-west coasts, with occasional very strong gusts extending to exposed mountain ridges later in the day.
General temperatures: Low of 24°C and a high of 31°C.

Gran Canaria
Largely sunny with some low cloud over northern coastal areas. Temperatures will continue to fall, especially in the midlands and on south-west-facing slopes, although highs of up to 34°C are still possible in the southern and western midlands and, locally, on south-east coasts. Overnight temperatures in these areas may remain above 25°C. Strong trade winds will bring occasional very strong gusts to the south-east and north-west coasts, as well as exposed mountain areas.
General temperatures: Low of 23°C and a high of 30°C.

Lanzarote
Mostly sunny with some cloud in the north. Temperatures will fall slightly, particularly inland and across the southern half of the island. Strong trade winds will continue, especially in the south, where there is a risk of very strong gusts.
General temperatures: Low of 23°C and a high of 30°C.

Fuerteventura
Mainly clear skies with some cloud affecting the eastern and western coasts early and late in the day. Temperatures will ease slightly in the west, although inland southern areas could still reach 34°C. Strong trade winds are expected, particularly across the southern half of the island.
General temperatures: Low of 23°C and a high of 29°C.
