Police explosives experts have removed three hand grenades and ammunition discovered in a cave beside a recently purchased home in Telde, Gran Canaria.
The weapons were found on 31st July while the homeowner was cleaning the cave. The Police were alerted at around midday, and specialist bomb disposal officers were sent to the property.
The owner said the cave contained a small concealed chamber and believed the items might date from the Spanish Civil War. However, experts will need to examine them to confirm their age and characteristics.
After checking that the area was safe, officers secured the three grenades and collected badly deteriorated ammunition of various calibres.
The items were taken away under controlled conditions for technical examination. They may later be safely destroyed in accordance with police procedures.
The operation removed a potential danger to the property’s occupants and the surrounding area. Police warned that old explosives can remain capable of detonating, even when heavily corroded.
