Public transport operator, TITSA, has completed the introduction of all 13 new double-decker buses, boosting capacity on some of the island's busiest routes linking Santa Cruz with the north and south of Tenerife.

The arrival of the final vehicle marks the completion of a fleet expansion aimed at meeting growing passenger demand while encouraging more people to use public transport.

Four key routes upgraded

The new double-decker buses are now operating on four major routes:

• Route 100: Santa Cruz – Puerto de la Cruz
• Route 108: Santa Cruz – Icod de los Vinos
• Route 110: Santa Cruz – Costa Adeje
• Route 112: Santa Cruz – Los Cristianos

Each bus has 85 seats, compared with 59 on the standard vehicles previously used, increasing passenger capacity by 44% per journey.

The Cabildo says the additional buses will provide around two million extra passenger places each year on the busy TF-1 and TF-5 motorway corridors.

Passenger numbers continue to grow

Routes 108, 110 and 112 carried more than four million passengers during 2025, and the new buses are expected to increase their combined capacity to around six million journeys.

Passenger profiles vary depending on the route. On services in the north of the island, around 90% of travellers are residents, rising to 97% on Route 108, which is widely used by commuters, students and families.

Demand on Route 108 has grown significantly, with the service now operating 46 more journeys each day than it did three years ago.

Modern features and improved safety

Built by Spanish manufacturer Ayats, the 15-metre-long buses include a range of features designed to improve comfort and accessibility.

Each vehicle is equipped with:

• Seating for 85 passengers
• Two wheelchair spaces and dual access ramps
• Free Wi-Fi
• USB charging ports
• Information screens
• Seatbelts on every seat

The buses also feature several advanced safety systems, including blind-spot detection, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warnings.

Traditional wing mirrors have been replaced by side-mounted camera systems, while seven internal CCTV cameras provide onboard security.

An Alcolock device has also been installed, preventing the bus from starting if the driver fails a breath alcohol test.

Fleet modernisation continues

The 13 double-deckers form part of a wider fleet renewal programme being carried out by the Cabildo.

Since 2023, TITSA has added 351 new buses to its fleet, with investment exceeding €125 million.

The company recorded more than 87 million passenger journeys in 2025, its highest annual figure to date, reflecting continued growth in public transport use across Tenerife.

Cabildo President Rosa Dávila said the arrival of the final double-decker completes the island's commitment to increasing capacity and making public transport a more attractive option, while Mobility Councillor Eulalia García said the larger buses will help accommodate rising passenger numbers and improve comfort on Tenerife's busiest routes.
