Orange alert for heavy rain this Saturday in the Canary Islands

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an orange weather alert for “significant risk” for today (Saturday) in the Canary Islands, due to heavy rain and storms expected in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the eastern, southern, and western parts of Gran Canaria, especially during the central hours of the day and in this afternoon.

Cloudy intervals with generally ‘moderate’ rain are expected, which may turn into occasionally strong showers accompanied by storms traversing the archipelago from west to east throughout the day.

Precipitation may be very heavy in inland areas and on the eastern slopes of the eastern islands, and above 2,000 metres, there will be more snow.

Temperatures will experience a decrease, which will be more pronounced in mid-altitude and mountainous areas of the islands. In Tenerife and the western islands, moderate north winds with intervals of strong gusts are expected, especially in high areas. In the eastern islands, light to moderate northwest winds, which will be stronger inland.
