The Canary Islands Government has officially approved plans to add a third lane to the TF-1 motorway between San Isidro (Granadilla de Abona) and Oroteanda (San Miguel de Abona), the final section that needed approval in the south of Tenerife.
This section has a budget of €126.3 million, and covers the stretch of the motorway from the new San Isidro junction, passed the south airport, to the newly finished Oroteanda interchange in Las Chafiras.
This section of the TF-1 is one of the busiest on the island, and the upgrade is considered essential for improving traffic flow in the south. Rosana Melián, Director General for Road Infrastructure, said the project is “vital for giving the south the road capacity needed as the area continues to grow”.
With this approval, the government now has all the necessary plans in place to expand the TF-1 in the south.
Next phase: Las Chafiras to Playa de Las Américas
Another major upgrade, from Oroteanda to Playa de Las Américas, was approved on 5th November. This project will be the next phase to start work on, with a cost of €175.49 million and a completion time of 42 months.
As well as adding a third lane in both directions, this phase includes upgrades to the junctions at Parque de la Reina, Guaza, Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Américas, improving access to key tourist and residential areas.
Better access to the South Hospital
The government also confirmed plans to widen the TF-28 road leading to Chayofa and the Hospital del Sur. It will become two separate carriageways with two lanes in each direction, allowing improved connections between the TF-1 and the hospital.
