Norwegian Airlines are considering reopening their bases in the Canary Islands

Norwegian Airlines, whose survival was threatened during the pandemic, is considering reopening its bases in the Canary Islands to become a main player again in the short-haul market in Europe.

The airline had well-documented financial problems before Covid and entered bankruptcy protection closing its long-haul operation in 2019 when few expected them to survive. But after a complete corporate overhaul and a refocus on short-haul routes, Norwegian is thriving once again.

This was explained in an interview with the EFE news agency by the company's CEO, Geir Karlsen, who this week visited the airline's corporate offices in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona).

He explained that “After reaching a limit situation due to financial problems and the COVID-19 crisis, Norwegian continues to recover muscle and will use 77 aircraft for our operations this summer.”

In the case of Spain, Karlsen said that "the market is working very well" and highlighted that the company wants to make the base in Barcelona, which is operating again this year, but only in the summer season, operate throughout the year.

Norwegian is the second airline making positive moves toward the Canary Islands after Ryanair confirmed they are reopening their bases at airports in the Archipelago.
