The Canary Islands Government has announced a weather pre-alert for high winds which started at midnight this morning, Wednesday 4th December. The alert affects the islands of El Hierro, La Palma, and Tenerife, following forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other advisory sources.
This decision, coordinated by the Directorate General of Emergencies, is part of the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Events (PEFMA).
Areas Affected by the Alert
The pre-alert applies to specific regions within the affected islands:
Tenerife: The Teno massif, the southern and southeastern coasts. Elevated areas including Tacoronte, El Sauzal, La Matanza, La Victoria, Santa Úrsula, and La Orotava, plus highland areas in Candelaria, Arafo, Güímar, Guía de Isora, and Adeje.
El Hierro: Western and northern areas.
La Palma: Western regions and the island’s mountain summits.
Weather Forecast
According to AEMET, the winds will predominantly come from the northeast, moderate in strength but with strong gusts along the coast.
In higher altitudes and mid-level zones, easterly winds are expected, with gusts likely to exceed 70 km/h in typical acceleration zones, such as the southeastern and northwestern coasts, as well as in mountainous and elevated regions.
Safety Recommendations
The Canary Islands Government has issued several precautionary measures for residents and visitors:
Secure Property: Close and secure doors, windows, and awnings. Remove items like flower pots or objects from balconies and rooftops that could fall and cause accidents.
Inspect Buildings: Check for loose or damaged structures such as cornices, balconies, or facades to prevent falling debris.
Limit Travel: Avoid unnecessary travel by road, and exercise caution if travelling is essential. Outdoor activities like excursions or camping should be postponed until conditions improve.
Stay Informed: Follow updates on weather conditions and official instructions via media outlets and local authorities.
These measures aim to reduce risks associated with the forecasted weather and ensure public safety. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution and stay updated as the situation develops.
