The Canary Islands will continue to appear on redesigned euro banknotes, the European Central Bank (ECB) has confirmed, following concerns over their absence from the shortlisted designs.

The ECB unveiled the proposed designs at its headquarters in Frankfurt on 23rd July and launched a public survey inviting Europeans to give their views until 21 September.

The shortlisted concepts are based on two themes: European culture, and rivers and birds. However, early sketches appeared to leave out the Canary Islands, several other European islands and overseas territories from the map of Europe.

The ECB said designers had initially received general guidelines that did not specify how islands and overseas territories should be represented.

It has now confirmed that these areas will be added during the next stage, once a final proposal has been selected and adapted for use on real banknotes.

The Canary Islands will therefore remain represented on future euro notes. Residents can take part in the ECB’s public consultation until 21st September.
