Work is due to start in the next few days on a new dual-direction cycle path in El Médano, in the south of Tenerife, in what local officials say is a major step towards promoting sustainable travel and improving the town’s seafront.
The €1.7 million project, funded through the European Union’s Next Generation recovery programme, covers an area of nearly 2,800 square metres, running from the La Trinchera area, through El Cabezo, Los Martines, Ensenada Pelada, and Médano Beach. It is expected to be completed in five phases over the course of eight months.
As well as the 2.2-metre-wide cycle path, the project includes resurfacing works, new signage, improved lighting, and repairs to the promenade and street furniture. The aim, according to Granadilla de Abona council, is to create a more comfortable and visually appealing coastal space for both locals and visitors.
Mayor José Domingo Regalado said this is part of a broader plan to modernise the area's tourism infrastructure and reduce its environmental impact.
“This investment is an important milestone for El Médano and for the future of sustainable tourism in our municipality,” he said. “Securing European funding in 2022 has allowed us to move forward with key projects that benefit both residents and the local economy.”
Councillor for Public Works and Services, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, said the cycle path is designed to support sustainable mobility, cut carbon emissions, and attract new types of visitors to the area.
The project forms part of the Granadilla de Abona Sustainable Tourism Plan, and is seen as a key initiative in helping the region transition towards a greener and more connected future.
