A Tenerife woman has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to smuggle drugs into Tenerife II prison for her son, as well as being ordered to pay a fine of €2,500.
The incident occurred on September 2nd, 2022, when the woman visited the prison where her son is behind bars, and while passing through security, officials discovered nearly 36 grams of cannabis divided into two plastic-wrapped portions and approximately 10 grams of cocaine with a purity of 74%.
The woman admitted her intent to smuggle the substances into the prison for her son to sell because they could have been worth an estimated €812.50. Initially, the prosecution asked for a seven-year sentence and the same fine. However, a plea deal was reached between the woman's lawyer and the prosecution, avoiding a trial in the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz.
The case highlights ongoing challenges with drug smuggling into prisons where narcotics can fetch high prices due to restricted access.
