After several days of mild temperatures, cloud cover and occasional light rain, the Canary Islands are bracing for a sharp change in weather. A surge in heat is expected across the archipelago, accompanied by calima, as dust from the Sahara moves in, according to the State Meteorological Agency.

From today (Wednesday), conditions will begin to shift as warmer air and light winds bring the first signs of haze. The impact is expected to be felt across all islands, with the eastern islands and higher ground likely to see the most noticeable effects.

Temperatures will start to climb gradually on Thursday, with highs reaching around 23°C in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and similar values in Las Palmas. Conditions will remain fairly settled, although the increase in warmth will become more noticeable.

By Friday, the change will become more evident. Calima is expected to spread, particularly at higher altitudes, while temperatures continue to rise, reaching around 24°C to 26°C in many areas.

The most significant heat is forecast for Saturday, when temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C in large parts of the islands. In some areas, especially inland and on southern and western slopes, temperatures could reach or even surpass 34°C.

This mini heatwave is considered unusual for April and is expected to last into the weekend. Winds will also shift, with southerly gusts developing in exposed areas, helping to carry the dust across the islands.

The sudden change is likely to affect both residents and tourists, particularly those planning outdoor activities. Visitors are advised to stay well hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak hours, and be aware that calima can reduce visibility and worsen air quality, especially for those with respiratory conditions.
