Man under investigation for operating illegal zoo at his home in Tenerife

The Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service (EPRONA) has launched an investigation into a man suspected of maintaining an ‘illegal zoo’ in his home in Tenerife. The makeshift facility, located in the centre of Santa Cruz, reportedly housed a large variety of animals without any of the required permits and licences.

The authorities discovered around 50 birds, 20 amphibians, four reptiles, numerous fish, and a protected marine coral on the man’s property. The animals were kept on a terrace and within the home, in conditions that raised significant concerns. Officials reported deteriorated cages and tanks, food infested with insects, unsanitary waste accumulation, and a lack of essential veterinary care.

As part of the investigation, EPRONA agents confiscated a leopard tortoise, a pink parrot, and an orange tree coral, all species listed in Annex B of the European Regulation on the protection of wild fauna and flora. Additionally, they also seized an Asian toad, identified as an exotic invasive species.

The confiscated animals were transferred to the Wild Animal Recovery Center (CRAS) operated by the Neotrópico Foundation. A house sparrow, whose possession and sale are prohibited, was also removed and placed in the La Tahonilla Wildlife Recovery Centre.

EPRONA has filed charges against the homeowner, alleging violations related to the protection of flora, fauna, and animal abuse. The case may also lead to administrative sanctions from various public organisations overseeing animal welfare and environmental protection.
