A man has died after his car left the road and plunged around 30 metres into a ravine in Gran Canaria. The crash happened yesterday morning (Sunday) in Fagajesto, in the municipality of Gáldar.
The vehicle caught fire following the crash, with the flames spreading to approximately 600 square metres of nearby reed beds. Firefighters brought the blaze under control, while a specialist unit stayed to cool the affected area and prevent it from reigniting.
Emergency medical teams could only confirm the driver’s death due to the severity of his injuries.
Local Police and Guardia Civil officers assisted with the emergency response. An investigation has been launched to establish why the vehicle left the road.
The fatal crash came just hours after another serious accident on Saturday, on the GC-100 near Cuatro Puertas in Telde. A 42-year-old father was seriously injured and his seven-year-old daughter suffered head and facial injuries after their car plunged around 40 metres down a ravine shortly before 11:00pm.
Firefighters freed the man from the overturned vehicle before both casualties were taken to hospital for treatment.
