THURSDAY WEATHER: Strong winds and rougher seas in the Canary Islands today

Strong trade winds and rougher seas will be the main features of today's weather in the Canary Islands, while some areas will also see cloud and occasional showers.

Wind gusts could exceed 70km/h in exposed areas, with the strongest conditions expected around the usual acceleration zones and between the islands.

Despite the stronger winds, temperatures will remain relatively high for the time of year, with some areas still approaching 30°C.

Cloud and showers in Tenerife

Tenerife will have a mixture of conditions today. Low cloud is expected across both northern and southern parts of the island during the morning, with some light rain and mist possible.

The strengthening trade winds will be particularly noticeable in exposed parts of the island.

Conditions should improve during the afternoon as the cloud begins to break. Temperatures are forecast to reach around 28°C in southern areas.

Brighter in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura should have considerably more sunshine once early cloud clears.

Northern and western Lanzarote will start with some low cloud before conditions become brighter, with Arrecife expected to reach around 29°C.

Fuerteventura will also have some cloud across northern areas during the morning before skies clear. Puerto del Rosario is forecast to reach around 27°C.

Gran Canaria will see low cloud across the north, where an occasional light shower is possible, while southern areas should remain much brighter.

Waves reach around 2.5 metres

Sea conditions will become rougher as the trade winds strengthen.

Northern coasts can expect rough seas with waves reaching around 2.5 metres, potentially exceeding that height in some of the channels between the islands.

Conditions should be considerably calmer along more sheltered southern coasts.

Anyone swimming, surfing or taking part in other coastal activities should check local sea conditions before entering the water, particularly along exposed northern coastlines.
