A man has been arrested in Lanzarote after National Police officers discovered seven packages of cocaine, weighing a total of 7.5 kilograms, hidden inside his vehicle.
The incident occurred on 25th June in Arrecife, when officers stopped the driver after noticing him swerving between lanes and using his mobile phone while driving, behaviour that posed a clear risk to other road users. During the traffic stop, the man's visibly extreme nervousness raised further suspicions.
A subsequent search of the car revealed seven tightly wrapped bricks of cocaine hidden inside, so the driver was immediately arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.
Following the completion of police procedures, the suspect was brought before the competent judicial authority, which ordered his immediate imprisonment pending further investigation.
This arrest forms part of a wider clampdown on drug trafficking networks across the Canary Islands. Earlier in June, National Police carried out “Operation Sombra Negra,” dismantling a major drug trafficking ring. That operation led to the arrest of 48 people and the seizure of approximately 3.8 tonnes of cocaine, along with speedboats, vehicles, and significant sums of cash, during coordinated raids on Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote.
More recently, police in Arrecife also launched legal proceedings against a group accused of smuggling cocaine and heroin onto Lanzarote using so-called “mules” people who conceal drugs inside their bodies to avoid detection.
Authorities continue to intensify efforts to disrupt drug trafficking routes through the archipelago, with law enforcement agencies urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
