Man arrested for smoking on flight from Manchester to Tenerife

A flight from Manchester to Tenerife turned into high drama at 30,000 feet when a passenger was caught smoking mid-air, prompting the pilot to call ahead for police to meet the aircraft on landing.

The incident unfolded on a flight bound for Tenerife South Airport on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the cabin as stunned passengers looked on. According to air traffic control, the captain alerted authorities while still in the air, demanding immediate police presence upon landing due to the individual’s outrageous behaviour.

As the plane touched down safely at Tenerife South Airport, National Police officers were waiting to escort the offender off the aircraft. Passengers reported a tense atmosphere on board, with crew members forced to intervene as the passenger blatantly flouted one of the most basic rules of modern air travel.

Smoking on commercial flights has been banned for decades, with strict international laws in place to protect both health and safety. Lighting up in the cabin is not just inconsiderate, it’s dangerous.

Aviation authorities wasted no time in condemning the incident. Air traffic controllers posted their support on X for the flight crew and passengers, who they said showed “incredible patience and composure” in the face of the passenger’s reckless behaviour.

While the airline involved has yet to confirm the consequences for the disruptive traveller, penalties for such infractions can be severe. In many cases, offenders face hefty fines, or even arrest, upon arrival.

This latest mid-air incident is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by disruptive passengers and the pressure airline crews face in maintaining order at 35,000 feet.
