A man has been arrested in Corralejo after more than €8,000 worth of high-value belongings were stolen from a home in La Oliva, Fuerteventura.

The Guardia Civil launched an investigation earlier this month after the homeowner returned to find the lock on the property had been forced. A locksmith had to be called before the owner could get inside.

Once inside, the resident discovered several unfamiliar objects, including a cash register, a waist bag containing tools and a mobile phone.

A number of valuable belongings had also disappeared from the property, with the stolen items valued at €8,140. They included two bicycles, four guitars, sound equipment, a television, three wetsuits, a kitesurfing board, two harnesses and other sports equipment.

Investigators subsequently linked the break-in to another burglary at a business in the same municipality. Police said a cash register stolen from that premises was the same one found inside the home.

Officers also recovered most of the belongings taken from the property, which had allegedly been hidden in a stairwell area of the building.

Further evidence gathered during the investigation led officers to identify a suspect, who was later arrested during a coordinated police operation in Corralejo.

The man has been placed at the disposal of the court in Puerto del Rosario as investigations into the burglaries continue.
