On January 12th, the Marina Lanzarote will be the start of the prestigious RORC Transatlantic Yacht Race, a renowned 3,000-mile competition that brings together some of the world's most skilled sailors and advanced vessels for its 11th edition.
Organsed by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) in collaboration with Calero Marinas, the Yacht Club de France, and the International Maxi Association, this race connects the canaries with the island of Grenada.
In the last few weeks, Marina Lanzarote has welcomed an impressive fleet of competitors gearing up for this challenging journey. The race is a testament to maritime heritage and the adventurous spirit of its participants, blending strategy, endurance, and a deep passion for the sea.
The 2022 edition saw the monohull record set by Comanche, skippered by Mitch Booth, with an impressive time of 7 days, 22 hours, 1 minute, and 4 seconds. This year’s competitors aim to surpass that mark, navigating the unpredictable conditions of the Atlantic and demonstrating their adaptability and meticulous planning.
The lead-up to the race also offers participants and visitors the chance to experience Lanzarote’s rich culture, gastronomy, and heritage. A diverse social program has been developed to highlight the island's unique offerings while involving the local community and visitors alike.
Activities include school visits, children's workshops, exhibitions, and nautical events. A highlight will be a roundtable discussion featuring renowned local sailors, providing insights into the world of professional sailing. Additionally, a spectator boat will allow attendees to watch the race’s dramatic start live—a unique opportunity requiring prior registration via the following link: Spectator Boat Registration.
