Joy as strikes at Spanish airports over Christmas are called off

The management company of Spain’s airports (AENA) and the unions representing airport workers reached a final agreement yesterday (Wednesday) for the payment of productivity pay and bonuses. This pact means the cancellation of the strike action that threatened tens of thousands of travellers to Spain and the Canary Islands this Christmas.

The strikes that had been announced for the dates of December 22nd, 23rd, 30th, and 31st, as well as January 5th and 6th, will not now happen to the relief of all involved, especially those travelling for the Christmas and New Year holidays, one of the busiest times of the year, especially in the Canary Islands.

The strikes were called because the unions were demanding the payment of bonuses that were stopped during the pandemic due to the brutal drop in air traffic. The unions argued: "We are now returning to historical highs for air travel and it is every worker's right to be paid accordingly.”
