Clio (Cliodna) O’Flynn, a well-known journalist and communications figure among the English-speaking community in the south of Tenerife, has been awarded an honorary British Empire Medal (BEM) for her outstanding service to the public.
The award was presented recently at the Convento de Adeje by the British Ambassador to Spain, Sir Alex Ellis, in a ceremony chaired by Adeje councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín.
A trusted voice for foreign residents
Clio has lived in Callao Salvaje for more than 20 years, becoming a vital link between the British community and the local authorities. For over a decade, she has presented ‘Adeje English Time’ on Radio Sur Adeje 107.9 FM, providing clear, essential guidance on local services and administrative processes.
Her work became particularly crucial during Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic, helping thousands of foreign residents navigate major changes and stay updated with reliable information. Adeje Town Hall highlighted that her communication efforts at the height of the pandemic were “fundamental” in reaching the international population through written, audio and video formats.
Connecting communities
Alongside her radio and journalism work, she is employed by the Municipal Public Services Company of Adeje (EMSA) and collaborates closely with the Town Hall’s Communication Office, as well as the social welfare, tourism and protocol departments. She is also responsible for Adeje’s English-language news blog and social media channels, ensuring information reaches residents wherever they are.
Her involvement in local community life in one of Adeje’s most multicultural areas has made her a respected point of contact for English-speaking residents. Councillor Méndez praised her ability to bring communities together and help newcomers better understand their rights and responsibilities.

International recognition
Originally from Ireland, Clio has enjoyed a long and recognised career in journalism, including serving as a director at Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ in the 1990s. She continues to collaborate with media outlets such as RTÉ and the BBC, offering trusted analysis about the Canary Islands and countering misinformation affecting residents abroad.
Adeje Town Hall has extended warm congratulations to her, recognising her tireless commitment to public service and her vital role as a communicator and community bridge for Tenerife’s diverse English-speaking population.
Many congratulations from us all at the Canarian Weekly.
