A 66-year-old man was rescued by helicopter on Sunday afternoon after suffering a fall while hiking in Las Cañadas del Teide, according to reports by the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The incident occurred at around 3:20pm when CECOES received an alert reporting that a person required medical assistance after falling on a trail within the Teide National Park area.

Red Cross rescue teams made their way to the injured hiker and provided initial assistance. Emergency services confirmed that the man had sustained a moderate injury to his lower limb.

Due to the location of the accident, a rescue helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) was deployed to evacuate him from the mountainous terrain.

After being airlifted to safety, the man was attended to by SUC medical personnel before being transferred by ambulance to the Hospital del Norte for further treatment.

The incident highlights the challenges emergency crews can face when responding to accidents in Tenerife’s rugged volcanic landscape, particularly in popular hiking areas around Mount Teide, which attract thousands of walkers and visitors each year.

Authorities continue to remind hikers to wear suitable footwear, carry sufficient water, and take extra care when using mountain trails, especially during periods of high temperatures and changing weather conditions.
