The Canary Islands continue to experience intense heat as a heatwave extends its grip over the region today (Monday). According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 34°C in several areas, particularly in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura where there will also be a calima.
The heat is most pronounced on the southern and western slopes of the mountainous islands, where yellow weather warnings have been issued.
In addition to the scorching temperatures, the islands are also bracing for strong trade winds. Gusts are forecasted to reach speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour on the southeast and northwest slopes of Tenerife and the westernmost islands, particularly during the early hours of this morning.
LANZAROTE:
There will be partly cloudy skies with intervals of medium and low clouds, especially in the western areas during the morning. Aemet predicts temperatures could rise to 34°C, due to the arrival of haze from the east. The island will also experience strong trade winds.
General temperatures: High of 33°C and low of 23°C.
FUERTEVENTURA:
Similar to Lanzarote, Fuerteventura will see partly cloudy skies and a significant haze. Temperatures will rise, with the southern half of the island expected to reach 34°C. Strong winds will persist throughout the day.
General temperatures: High of 32°C and low of 23°C.
GRAN CANARIA:
The island will have cloudy intervals in the northern coastal areas, while the rest will see partly cloudy skies. A significant haze is expected in inland areas and at peaks, with temperatures reaching a sweltering 37°C on the southern slopes. Strong trade winds and occasional very strong gusts are likely.
General temperatures: High of 31°C and low of 22°C.
TENERIFE:
Northern coastal areas will experience cloudy intervals, while the rest of the island will have partly cloudy skies. A significant haze is predicted in inland areas and at summits. Temperatures will rise, exceeding 34°C on the southern and western slopes. Strong winds are also anticipated.
General temperatures: High of 32°C and low of 24°C.
As temperatures continue to rise, residents and tourists are advised to take precautions against the extreme heat, stay hydrated, and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. The strong winds could also pose hazards, particularly in coastal and mountainous regions, making it crucial to stay updated with the latest forecasts
