The Canary Islands Government, through the Directorate General of Emergencies, has updated its pre-alert status for coastal phenomena effective from 2:00pm on 13th January 2025.
The measure follows advisories from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and aligns with the Canary Islands’ Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
Areas Affected
The pre-alert covers several regions, including:
- Lanzarote and Fuerteventura
- Western, northern, and northeastern coasts of La Palma and El Hierro
- The northern coast of La Gomera
- North and eastern coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria
Weather Conditions
- Sea Conditions: Combined waves of 2 to 3 metres are expected.
- Winds: Northeasterly winds reaching force 5 to 6, with speeds of 29 to 49 km/h.
- Swell: Northwesterly swell of 1 to 2.5 metres.
Safety Recommendations
The Directorate General of Emergencies urges residents and visitors to take the following precautions:
Coastal Safety
- Avoid standing on piers or breakwaters, particularly for photos or videos near breaking waves.
- Do not fish in high-risk areas.
- Protect your property from potential seawater intrusion.
Beach and Water Safety
- Refrain from driving on roads near the coastline.
- Avoid swimming in unfamiliar, remote beaches or those with strong currents.
- Do not swim on beaches with red flags, rough seas, or without lifeguard services.
Maritime Activities
- Postpone water sports and nautical activities in affected areas.
- Secure boats in sheltered locations.
General Advice
- Warn others if you see them in dangerous areas.
- In case of an emergency, call 1-1-2.
If Caught in the Water
- Move away from breaking waves and rocks and call for help.
- If dragged by currents, remain calm, avoid swimming against the current, and wait until it weakens before swimming to safety.
