Fuerteventura Airport named best in the Canary Islands and fifth in Spain

Fuerteventura Airport has been recognised as the best airport in the Canary Islands and the fifth best in Spain, according to the latest AirHelp Score 2025 rankings.

The airport also secured the 88th spot globally, earning it a place among the top 100 airports in the world for punctuality, passenger experience and quality of services.

The annual AirHelp Score, compiled by the international organisation AirHelp — which specialises in defending air passenger rights — evaluated 250 airports across 68 countries. This year, 14 Spanish airports made it into the global list, including five from the Canary Islands.

Bilbao tops Spain’s list, Fuerteventura leads the Canaries

Bilbao Airport leads the national ranking with a score of 8.16, placing it 16th worldwide and making it the second-best airport in Europe. Its strong points were high punctuality (8.3), positive passenger reviews (8.0) and quality services (7.7).

Seville Airport took second place in Spain, climbing an impressive 30 positions to reach 68th globally. Meanwhile, Madrid-Barajas dropped 26 spots to 76th worldwide, slipping behind Seville.

In the Canary Islands, the big winner was Fuerteventura Airport, entering the ranking at 88th worldwide, ahead of Tenerife North (105), Gran Canaria (138), Tenerife South (154), and Lanzarote (187). This means the Canary Islands now boast five airports among the world’s best, reflecting positively on the archipelago’s importance as a global tourism hub.

Highlights and challenges in Spain and Europe

Elsewhere in Spain, Valencia took fourth place nationally (81st globally), followed by Fuerteventura and Tenerife North. Málaga and Alicante also saw improvements, reaching 124th and 126th, respectively. Barcelona-El Prat, once a top performer, dropped 38 spots to 127th, making it only the ninth-best airport in Spain this year.

Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca faced significant declines, falling to 203rd and 208th, respectively.

On a broader scale, despite slight improvements, European airports continued to lag behind global leaders in punctuality and service quality. The only European airport in the global top ten was Lisbon. In contrast, airports in the Middle East, South Africa and North America dominated the highest positions thanks to stronger on-time records and overall passenger satisfaction.

A boost for the Canary Islands

The recognition of Fuerteventura and four other Canarian airports is a boost for the region’s reputation, reassuring both residents and millions of visitors each year that the islands offer reliable, quality airport facilities.

With global tourism competitiveness on the rise, these rankings help underline the Canaries’ commitment to providing an excellent travel experience, starting right from the airport.
