OFFICIAL: No hospitality strikes as pay deal is signed by employers and unions

Employers’ associations and most major trade unions in Tenerife’s hospitality, leisure, and restaurant sectors have signed a new three-year agreement, preventing strikes during the busy summer season.

The deal, finalised on Friday, guarantees wage increases of up to 13.5% by 2028 for nearly 34,000 hospitality workers and maintains labour peace as tourism growth on the island steadies.

Sindicalistas de Base, UGT, Intersindical Canaria, and USO Canarias all backed the agreement, which follows months of tense negotiations and averted a series of planned strikes. Only CCOO refused to sign, arguing the deal weakens workers’ rights and ties pay too tightly to inflation.

The agreement provides a 7% pay rise this year for hospitality workers, followed by 3.25% in each of the next two years, with a clause to protect purchasing power. Restaurant and leisure workers will see a total increase of 9% over three years.

Jorge Marichal, president of hotel association Ashotel, hailed the deal as a responsible move to ensure stability in the region’s top economic sector. Meanwhile, union leaders called it a hard-fought compromise, although CCOO maintained it falls short and criticised reduced protections for workers.

Despite these disagreements, the agreement secures industrial calm at a crucial time, offering reassurance to both residents and tourists during the peak holiday period.
