Government issues pre-alert across the islands for dangerous sea conditions

The Government of the Canary Islands has issued a pre-alert for coastal phenomena and adverse sea conditions for the entire archipelago, urging people to exercise extreme caution in bathing areas, especially along the northern, western, and eastern coastlines of the islands, to avoid risky or dangerous situations.

The pre-alert has been declared across all of the islands based on the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which predicts adverse sea conditions over the weekend. The northeast wind is expected to reach gusts of up to 60 km/h in open waters between the islands with higher relief, and waves could reach heights of 3 metres along the northern and western coasts of the islands.

The Canarian government advises against standing at the end of docks, piers, or breakwaters, risking taking photos or videos near where the waves break, even if the sea suddenly calms. It is also recommended not to swim at beaches with a red flag or in areas with strong waves and undertows lacking surveillance and lifeguard services.

Regarding nautical activities and watersports in the coastal areas affected by these conditions, it is preferable to postpone them to another time, fishing off rocks or coastal areas.
