Government and Cabildo sign agreement to build 257 social housing units in Tenerife

The Canary Islands Government and the Tenerife Cabildo have signed an agreement to construct 257 public housing units across various municipalities on the island, which will be specifically designed for social rental purposes, ensuring affordability for families with limited income.

The initiative, backed by a €45 million budget, represents a significant effort to address the urgent housing needs of Tenerife’s residents.

The signing ceremony, held on Tuesday, was attended by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, alongside Rosa Dávila, President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, and other officials, including the Director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), Antonio Ortega.

Speaking at the event, Clavijo described the agreement as "essential for ensuring that those in need can access dignified and affordable housing."

The project is part of the Canary Islands’ 2020–2025 Housing Plan and seeks to expand the availability of social rental housing. It will be co-financed by ICAVI, who are contributing 57.11% of the costs, and the Cabildo, which will cover the remaining 42.89%.

Housing Distribution and Management

The 257 homes will be distributed across seven municipalities, prioritising areas with the highest demand for affordable housing. The planned allocations include:

  • San Miguel de Abona: 90 homes
  • Granadilla de Abona (Cuevas Cho Portada): 47 homes
  • Güímar (La Cruces): 30 homes
  • El Rosario: 29 homes
  • Los Realejos: 27 homes
  • Santiago del Teide: 17 homes
  • El Sauzal: 17 homes

The Cabildo will oversee the full management of the project, including tendering, contracting, execution, and supervision. Meanwhile, ICAVI will provide the necessary land and cover technical and project management costs. Upon completion, the homes will be integrated into ICAVI’s public housing portfolio, ensuring they remain accessible for families with the greatest financial need.

Addressing Housing Challenges

Rosa Dávila hailed the agreement as a "historic step" for Tenerife. "Taking on these housing responsibilities is not just a decisive advancement in our capacity to act but also a show of accountability towards one of the most pressing social challenges we face," she said. Dávila added that the project would ease pressure on the local housing market and improve the quality of life for vulnerable families.

The initiative has been described as a cornerstone of the government’s commitment to fostering inter-administrative collaboration. Clavijo underlined this sentiment, noting that working together with local entities is essential for developing effective and sustainable solutions. He expressed confidence that the agreement would accelerate progress in the most affected areas and ensure resources reach those who need them most.

The homes will be specifically designed for social rental purposes, ensuring affordability for families with limited income.
