Four arrested at Tenerife South Airport carrying over 100 kilos of marijuana in luggage

In a major drug trafficking bust, agents of the Guardia Civil, working alongside customs officials from the Tax Agency, have apprehended four people at Tenerife South Airport, carrying over 100 kilos of marijuana in their suitcases.

Although limited details have been released, the suspects, aged between 24 and 41, were intercepted while travelling on the same flight from a non-EU country.

The operation unfolded during a routine checkpoint, where Guardia Civil agents and customs officials conducted random inspections of passengers and luggage from flights originating outside the European Union.

Suspicious items were flagged during X-ray scans of their luggage, partly because each of the four men was carrying two suitcases, which raised alarms due to their contents.

Upon questioning, the suspects displayed nervous and inconsistent behaviour, prompting officials to open their luggage. Inside the eight suitcases, authorities discovered over 110 kilograms of marijuana. The drugs were carefully vacuum-sealed and concealed within various types of fabric to evade detection.

Legal Proceedings Underway

Following the discovery, the suspects were arrested, and the drugs were confiscated. The case has been handed over to the judicial authorities for further investigation. If convicted, the individuals could face severe penalties under Spain's drug trafficking laws.

This successful operation highlights the ongoing vigilance of law enforcement agencies at Spain’s borders. Tenerife South Airport, as a key transit point for international travel, remains a critical hub for intercepting illicit substances entering Europe. Authorities reaffirm their commitment to combating organised drug smuggling and ensuring public safety.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to determine if the suspects are part of a larger criminal network.
