An accident occurred yesterday evening (Monday) on Avenida San Francisco in Los Cristianos, when an elderly driver ran over a man on a mobility scooter at a zebra crossing in front of the Castle Harbour complex.

The incident happened at around 7.30 pm, when the woman reportedly pulled out of a nearby parking area without noticing the scooter, colliding with the man, who is believed to be of Irish nationality.

Local Police and an ambulance quickly arrived at the complex, and the man received medical attention before being taken to hospital. The extent of his injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Shocked onlookers witnessed the collision, and some video footage of the aftermath has been captured and shared on social media. Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Accidents involving mobility scooters are not uncommon in the Canary Islands, particularly in busy tourist resorts.

In February 2023, a man on a mobility scooter was filmed attempting to cross the busy TF-65 near Las Chafiras during the morning rush hour. He made his way across the lanes of traffic before stopping in the middle of the carriageway, forcing cars to brake sharply. The incident, which quickly spread on social media, raised concerns among residents about the dangers of scooters being used on main roads not designed for them.

More recently, in May 2025, a five-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man were both injured in Torviscas, Costa Adeje, when a mobility scooter driven by the man collided with the child. The boy suffered minor injuries while the elderly driver was left with moderate injuries, and both were taken to Hospiten Sur hospital.

The case highlighted ongoing safety worries where scooters, pedestrians, and vehicles often share the same spaces.
